News Release: MassMu Textile Workshop Accents the NEA Big Read

Artist Allison Smith will lead the “Connecting Threads: An Introduction to Textiles” workshop at the Massillon Museum on Thursday, April 21, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Registration is now open—visit MassMu.org/tickets or call 330-833-4061. The fee, $25 ($20 for MassMu members) per person, includes all supplies.

The workshop is offered as an accompaniment to the themes in MassMu’s 2022 NEA Big Read book selection, An American Sunrise by Muscogee author Joy Harjo, US Poet Laureate. The workshop also complements the Threads Moving Backward and Forward: Contemporary Textile Artworks from Ohio exhibition in MassMu’s Fred F. Silk Community Room Gallery (through May 18, 2022).

“Connecting Threads” is among 30 public events created for the NEA Big Read in Western Stark County for 2022.  A bookmark listing all events is included in each free copy of An American Sunrise, which can be obtained at the Massillon Museum, the Massillon Public Library, and other distribution sites as long as supplies last.

An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. This project is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. One Tiger and Rotary Club of Massillon have provided additional Big Read and Little Read funding.

The Massillon Museum receives operating support from the Ohio Arts Council and ArtsinStark, as well as marketing support from Visit Canton.

The Massillon Museum is located at 121 Lincoln Way East (Ohio Route 172) in downtown Massillon. A visit to the Massillon Museum is always free and everyone is welcome. Free parking is available on adjacent streets and in nearby city lots. For more information, call the Museum at 330-833-4061 or visit massillonmuseum.org.
