MassMu Presents Do the Mu—Paper Basketweaving Workshop

MassMu Presents Do the Mu—Paper Basketweaving Workshop

Visit the Massillon Museum on Saturday, March 2, for Do the Mu. Artist Allison Hope Smith Hernandez will lead a free paper basketweaving workshop. Learn how to make colorful paper baskets using plaiting techniques and recycled materials.

Plaiting is a method of basketry that forms a checkerboard pattern when two pieces of material are woven over and under each other. All ages and ability levels are welcome and all supplies will be provided. Guests may drop in anytime between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.

Allison Hope Smith Hernandez is a double alumnus of Kent State University (Kent, Ohio) holding a BFA and MFA in studio art with a concentration in textiles. She works as the operations and digital media manager for FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art in Cleveland, Ohio. Smith previously served as the graduate assistant to the director of the Kent State University School of Art Collection and Galleries and as museum assistant for Massillon Museum. She has exhibited in Ohio, as well as in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Muncie, Indiana; Savannah, Georgia; and New York City. One of Smith’s weavings was displayed from 2021 to 2023 in the US Ambassador to Burkina Faso’s residence in Ouagadougou.

Do the Mu is a free monthly drop-in, hands-on intergenerational outlet for creativity. The Massillon Museum receives operating support from the Ohio Arts Council, ArtsinStark, and the citizens of Massillon. This workshop is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

MassMu is located at 121 Lincoln Way East (Ohio Route 172) in downtown Massillon. It is open during regular hours Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. A visit is always free.
