Avenue Arts Presents “Steel Magnolias”

Avenue Arts is proud to present their first live production since March 2020. Your favorite Louisiana gals are hitting the stage at Avenue Arts for their opening production of “Steel Magnolias”.  This production will be helmed by the extraordinary talent of Northeast Ohio actors. Due to COVID-19, this production has two casts of brilliant women to entertain you from the comfort of your own home.

The “Bashful Cast” consists of Julie Connair as Truvy, Matti-Lynn Chrisman as Shelby, Channon Booth as M’Lynn, Linda Alexander-Radak as Ouiser, Emily Weiss as Annelle, and Denise Young-Robb as Clairee. This cast will be performing on April 23, 24, 25 and May 7.

The “Blush Cast” consists of Anna Scheurer as Truvy, Alison Foutz as Shelby, Cheryl Foutz as M’Lynn, Stacy Shreve as Ouiser, Annie Tipton as Annelle and Jodie Amiot as Clairee. This cast will be performing on April 30, May 1, 2, and 8.

ABOUT THE PLAY:

The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Directed by David Lee and stage-managed by Michael Porter. Steel Magnolias runs from April 23 – May 8. Avenue Arts is located at 207 6th St. NW Canton, Ohio 44702.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, in-person tickets are not open to the general public. All tickets are virtual and can be purchased through our website.

Tickets for this upcoming production are $15 and can be purchased online at www.avenueartscanton.com
