Grant Money

Grant Winners ANNOUNCED!

Over $100,000 in Special Project Grants
The board of directors of ArtsinStark, the County Arts Council, has approved $126, 500 in Special Project Grants to 44 non-profit organizations across the county. A total of 70 applicants requested $275,000 from ArtsinStark. Awards range from $500 - $10,000 for projects in the areas of Innovation and SmArts (using the arts to increase supercharge learning in core subjects). “We’re excited that over the last 4 years we’ve awarded more than $700,000 in new Special Project Grants,” said ArtsinStark board chair Bob Timken. “These dollars have helped create the ‘arts explosion’ in Stark County that everyone is talking about.”

Some of the mini grant projects ($500 or less) include the Arts Academy at Summit to produce a Spanish cultural festival to enhance reading skills; North East Ohio Blues Association, in Alliance to provide a Women in Blues weekend workshop; and the Stark County 4-H Youth Program in Massillon to use leaf casting to teach ecology. Other special projects grantees, completing a more stringent application, could apply for amounts up to $10,000. Award winners include People’s Baptist Church to start a community youth band; the Botanical Garden Association to create “green art” projects for 5,000 children; and Malone University to use Japanese theatre to teach social studies. Three of the Special Project Grants were for the second year of funding for three long-terms SmArts programs in Massillon, Canton City and Canton Local schools. “We award dollars based the artistic quality, management excellence, and community impact of each project,” says Grants Committee Chair Dianne Oliver. “Our standards are high because we want the excellence, creativity, and discipline of the arts to truly be a part of creating smarter kids, new jobs, and healthier communities in Stark County.”

FAQ about Public Art

Q: I am an artist and I want do do a piece of public art.  But, I would like an ArtsinStark grant to complete it. Can I receive one?

A: Mini Grants and Special Project Grants are available from ArtsinStark.  The next round of these grants will be available in the Fall 2008.  At this time, however, grants are only available to non-profit organizations and not individuals.  As an individual artist, you may seek to partner with a non-profit organization to apply for one of these grants and thus make the project a piece of public art that will benefit the community.

It is a common misconception that ArtsinStark distributes money directly to individual artists and arts galleries.  Our primary means to distribute funds is through our grants.  Information for the next round of grants will be available in the Fall 2008.
